Students

We are very proud to be one of twenty four film festivals to have received a grant award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.  The grant was awarded to us based on the success of our six previous Student Programs, and has already allowed us to expand.  In April of 2009, with the help of our new Student Program Coordinator, Megan Walker, we screened a Best of Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival in local schools.

This year’s festival Student Program offers an outstanding collection of films, along with a special film studies curriculum.

Student Filmmaker Program Director, Denise Stilley and festival director John Tveten, gave a three day filmmaking seminar on the Hopi Reservation.  The first day was a general presentation on the art of filmmaking by Denise along with a presentation of a “Best of FMMF Student Program Films”.  Six students were chosen to participate in the hands on filmmaking component of the seminar based on an essay contest with over 50 entries.  The students completed training in story structure as well as camera skills and are currently in production on a short documentary about the springs in the village of Hotevilla on the Hopi Reservation and what they mean to community.

The program was extremely successful and we hope to provide this type of support again this coming year
