Last fall, Flagstaff high school students enrolled in the festival’s “Emerging Filmmaker Program” investigated recycling within our community. The result is the creation of their documentary, Re: Cycle in Flagstaff. The goal was to highlight the importance of sustainability within Northern Arizona and to extend this focus to the nation. The film addresses both the benefits and the downside of the green movement. It looks at the overall effect of recycling or not recycling, packaging, consumerism, and economics.

The students interviewed a range of specialists and civilians to offer various points of view. Locations for key shots and interviews include the local recycling plant, the Cinder Lake Landfill, the NAU Green Building, the Center for Environmental Research and Recycling at NAU, Macy’s Coffee Shop, and Flagstaff High School. The students also shot at the Leupp School with a focus on sustainability on the reservation and FRY’s grocery store, where the focus was on plastic bags and packaging. Currently in post-production, we believe that this documentary will inspire a wide variety of people to take initiative and to definitely question their current efforts.

The Emerging Filmmaker Program is an after-school activity for local youth to both learn about filmmaking and current issues. We are recruiting for next year’s program! If you are interested in helping out or know of a high school student that would like to participate, please contact Denise Stilley at AlmaLibre.Productions@gmail.com

Last night, May 4 2011, our friends from the Sedona International Film Festival visited Northern Arizona University’s Cline Library for a special screening of the 2010 documentary film Living for 32. The story follows Colin Goddard, a survivor of the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings. Colin, the first to call 911 from within the building, was shot four times and miraculously survived when thirty-two other people died.

Immediately following the screening, we were treated to an open forum with Colin Goddard himself. Mr. Goddard is extremely well-spoken and informative, and most of his thoughts were met with audience enthusiasm and applause. The few audience members who challenged his position on Arizona’s recently vetoed bill SB 1467, which would have allowed guns on university campuses, fell silent at his counter-arguments.

Mr. Goddard is an advocate for gun safety, campaigning for all states to require criminal background checks by private vendors at gun shows to help prevent people such as the shooter at Virginia Tech from acquiring military grade weapons. Rather than challenge our country’s second amendment, he simply asks for stricter laws in regards to gun sales, trafficking, ammunition sales, concealed weapons permits, and the like.

For everyone interested in becoming involved in Colin’s cause, I encourage them to visit the web page for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
